Over-the-Counter Interventions in Veterinary Behavioral Medicine
21 novembre 2025 | 14.00 - ca. 17.00 Uhr | Webinaire

The management of behavioral disorders in dogs and cats can be supported by the use of over-the-counter (OTC) treatments, particularly in cases of non-pathological reactive states and as an adjunct to structured behavioral therapy. This conference offers a critical review of the main classes of available products: pheromones, nutraceuticals, various dietary supplements, phytotherapy (including cannabidiol), aromatherapy, and functional nutrition.
Each category is examined with respect to its proposed mechanisms of action, current level of scientific evidence, and clinical relevance in veterinary practice. While some products show potential for modulating stress or mild anxiety, most suffer from a lack of robust data, heterogeneous study protocols, or effects indistinguishable from placebo.
Functional diets enriched with tryptophan, essential fatty acids, or bioactive peptides represent a promising yet underutilized approach. Although cannabidiol (CBD) is gaining popularity, it remains poorly documented in veterinary behavioral medicine, aside from better-supported applications in pain management.
